Some trivia about The Eyelash and false eyelashes.
D.W. Griffith, the well known movie Director invented the false
eyelash to make the eyes of his screen actresses more outstanding
as he was filming the 1916 epic movie Intolerance. They found
a wigmaker who got human hair and wove it through a fine gauze
product. The "false eye lash" was then gummed to the
actresses' lash line.
Hollywood set the trend but these were now being worn as a
fashion statement all over the world by many famous people. From
the 30's onwards the trend was to apply these to all the top
film stars especially with the films being in black and white.
The trend continued and the eyelash grew in popularity in the
States and around the celebrity world. It however was not until
the early 60's that a well known British model hit the scenes
and started to wear the lashes herself. So popular was Twiggy
that before we knew it she had started a new trend. This persuaded
every day individuals that this could be part of their make up.
Now we have the option of many different styles and colours.
We have thick lashes and we have fine. We have slanted and we
have straight. We have black brown or blue. Some have Diamonds,
Rhinestones or Studs to give more sparkle. The best of these
are made using Silk fibres. Cheaper ones are available but you
get what you pay for. If you are blonde we recommend the more
subtle colours and thickness but dark one are great for darker/tanned
skins.
An eyelash is one of the hairs that grow at the edge of the
eyelid. Eyelashes protect the eye from debris and act as warning
that the eye could be in danger. When this happens the normal
human reaction is to close the eye or blink. The lash has done
its job and protected the eye. This is quite common with animals
as well although the mechanism can be different for example a
Tiger will have whiskers which will do the same job as a human
lash.
The eyelashes of the embryo develop between the 7th and 8th
week. Their colour may differ from that of the hair, although
they tend to reflect the natural hair colour of the person. Someone
therefore with dark hair is more likely to have dark lashes and
similarly someone with light hair is likely to have light eyelashes.
If you are unlucky enough to lose your eyelashes then it's not
a problem as they will grow back in 6 to 8weeks. This is when
some false eyelashes will come in very useful.
Many different products can be used to make the eyelash. Human
hair is quite popular and Silk Fibers produce some excellent
results. The cheaper lashes are made from synthetic product like
nylon.
